People are not clutter

December 30, 2009  |  New York City

img_2992Manhattan’s prim Upper East Side is perhaps the most hostile residential neighborhood in the city to street vendors. On the UES, they like their immigrant workers to serve them behind closed doors (nannies, restaurant workers) but not so much in public (vendors, restaurant delivery guys).

A few months ago the UES community board passed an anti-vendor resolution calling for more enforcement against those pesky, “proliferating” street vendors. Hey, two can play that game! So SVP passed an anti-anti-vendor resolution in response. We see your resolution and raise you a resolution. You can read it here.

BTW, these Community Boards are often dominated by people like Julia Willkie, an UES condo owner who complained in the NY Times a few months ago that street vendors were “clutter.”  We’re sure that’s what they said about your grandparents, too, Ms. Willkie.  In case you´re wondering what the vendors in the neighborhood really look like, and what havoc they are (not) creating, here are a few pictures.

  1. I’m a long time UESer and I love our vendors. I love the book people (and I miss the great old guy who sold used paperbacks bet. Lex and Third), the food vendors (esp. the fruit/veg guys, who I depend on), even the scarf guys (one year I bought a bunch of the Russian-style imported pashminas as gifts). I would be disappointed if too many of them get pushed out of the neighborhood.

  2. Thanks for your comment, djh! We know there are many others like you.
